What is Content Writing?

  • You write to inform, explain or describe something
  • Longer in length than copywriting
  • Making difficult content, easy to understand for the reader
  • Making engaging content
  • Taking on relevant info and making it digestible for the reader
  • Marketing focused- attract people to buy something by giving them information
  • Blog Writing
  • SEO
  • Editing and Proofreading
  • Writing Webpages
  • Writing White papers
  • Anything where you write to inform and educate the reader; more factual and in-depth in nature
  • Creates brand loyalty

Content Writing is not

  1. Something to sell
  2. Journalism
  3. Videography
  4. Graphic Designing
  5. Technical Writing

What is Copy Writing?

  • You write to sell a product/ service- to the point
  • Massive info presented in a few words
  • Psychological- focus is on what motivates the customer to buy a product- write in a way that would motivate customers to buy
  • Use short sentences- easier to read and understand
  • Write the first sentence good- keep the people reading- e.g. tell a little story; or mention something regarding the end to keep suspense
  • Use specific headlines- tell the reader what the content is actually about- e.g. use ‘Save 2 Hours Per Day with These 7 Productivity Hacks’ rather than using ‘Save More Time the Easy Way’
  • Use FOMO/ Fear of Missing Out approach- write in a way people take things to be important- e.g. deadline ends on 12th December’ 21 at 11:59 pm
  • Write a strong Lead- the first paragraph after the headline
    • Use hook in your first or second sentence
    • Grab the readers’ attention from here
    • It should be 6-8 sentences long
    • Lead should be short
    • Use mini stories
  • Do not use big word- use unique ones
  • Use the AIDA formula- Attention, Interest, Desire and Action
  • Instead of mentioning benefits; mention features
  • Address the client’s objections- e.g. I think its too expensive- deal with these objections in a way that appeals the client
  • Talk to customers- do customer research
  • Add the element of urgency- such as limited time offer; Limited stock left; Only 25 pieces left- you should be honest to maintain trust
  • Mention customer reviews/ testimonials for social proof- three steps for good testimonials:
    • Before- how they were before using the product/ service
    • After- how they are after using the product/ service
    • What they would tell to other people
  • Used crooked numbers; not rounded ones- helps to grab more attention

How Content and Copy Mesh Together

  • Combine different skills together and sell them as a package to the client
  • Such as website copy+ blog writing+ editing of current material on website
  • Clients prefer one stop for all

Know, Learn and Sell

  • Create a services list- sit and think what you already know, what you can learn, what you can sell right now and what can you sell as meshed services
  • Know- Make a list of at least 3 types of writing you would easily sell- e.g. blog posts, social media posts, website content; collect 1-3 of your best samples to send them to clients
  • Learn- Make a list of 3 types of skills you think you can master; create 1-3 samples after mastering the skill
  • Sell- make a list of the types of skill combination you are going to sell; get in touch with existing clients and offer new and meshed skills
